Samoyed Characteristics
The Samoyed is a regal, intelligent and affectionate breed. While they make wonderful additions to a family, they typically bond with one person in particular. With that said, they are not for everyone, as they are known to be a very ‘talkative’ breed with their tendency to bark and bellow when they are unhappy or suspicious of others. They are also a highly-strung breed and can be quite demanding.
The Samoyed originated as a working dog in Russia in the 19th Century, and their herding instincts are still very much alive today. This breed is known to chase small animals while outside and is best when kept on a leash.
Leash training is essential, as the Samoyed can be quite the puller – especially when they catch a scent. This breed is best suited to being the only pet in a household.
Due to their working dog instincts, Samoyed’s require daily exercise and enjoy mentally stimulating jobs or activities. Under-stimulation in this breed can lead to boredom and destructive behaviors, so it may be a good idea to allow a Samoyed to regularly engage in agility exercises and other dog sports.
Samoyed Major Health Concerns
Like other Spitz-breed dogs, the Samoyed is prone to glaucoma, Hip Dysplasia and hypothyroidism. They are also prone to Samoyed Hereditary Ghlomerulopathy, a type of kidney disease typically found in males, but can be found in females as well.
Samoyed Interesting Facts
The Samoyed comes in a few shades of white, specifically pure white, biscuit and cream. Their double coat makes them heavy shredders and require yearly grooming to prevent matting.
