Neapolitan Mastiff Characteristics
The Neapolitan Mastiff is thought to date to 3000 BC and was used as a guard dog in Tibet. The Neo, as they are often called, have a reputation for being 200-pound lap dogs and are highly affectionate and loyal.
They are guard dogs but are normally not aggressive without reason.
While they are active as puppies, adult Neos tend to favor lounging and often need ample space to do so. If they are in a confined space, they may knock over furniture to find room to be comfortable in. They also do best in a large, fenced in backyard where they can understand the limits of their property.
They can be excellent with children if socialized properly however their size can be dangerous to small children as they can easily knock them over. They also have a tendency to drool when they eat or drink or are nervous, so they are not suitable for those who prefer a neat dog.
Neapolitan Mastiff Major Health Concerns
While Neapolitan Mastiffs are generally a healthy breed, they can be prone to Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, Cardiomyopathy, Cherry Eye and Fold Dermatitis.
