Irish Wolfhound Characteristics
The Irish Wolfhound may be one of the largest breeds in the world, but don’t let their size fool you. These gentle giants have a kind disposition and are kind, patient, and aim to please their family. They are wonderful family dogs and are especially friendly with children, dogs and other animals.
Originating as a hunting dog, the Irish Wolfhound is known to pull on the leash in pursuit of scents. Due to their enormous size, this can be problematic to their handler. Basic obedience and leash training is essential from a young age to prevent any undesirable leash habits from forming. The Irish Wolfhound is easily trainable and respond well to consistent but gentle leadership.
As with many large breed dogs, the Irish Wolfhound requires a large area to play and exercise. They are most suited to homes that have a large sized garden and require long walks or runs each day. Many Irish Wolfhounds enjoy running alongside their handler as they rollerblade or ride their bike. Their large size allows them to keep up a consistently fast pace.
Irish Wolfhound Major Health Concerns
The Irish Wolfhound is prone to bloat and gastric torsion. It is strongly recommended that owners speak to their veterinarian about proper nutrition and the proper balance of exercise for their Irish Wolfhound, as these are the two contributing factors to these serious health conditions.
