What’s Included in the Test
This test provides you with the following information:
- Breed Composition: The lab analyzes your horse’s genetic profile to see how it compares with horses of various breeds, disciplines, and populations worldwide. This insight helps you better understand your horse’s heritage and potential.
- Family Connections: “Find My Herd” displays your horse’s family ties in a digital genetic pedigree that can include cousins, aunts, uncles, or even parents, siblings, and offspring. By exploring these connections, you gain a deeper understanding of the influences that have shaped your equine companion.
- Identification of Similar Horses: Discover horses similar to yours, including notable horses! This innovative genetic tool identifies equines with similar genetic traits, providing insights into potential relatives or shared breed affiliations of your horse.
- Genomic Inbreeding Value: Another valuable aspect this test covers is inbreeding. It’s well-known that inbreeding (breeding closely related animals, especially over multiple generations) is generally not ideal but was almost inevitable when there were far fewer horses for breeding. Today, however, selective breeding practices can maximize genetic diversity and performance. A recent study of thoroughbreds found that a 10% increase in inbreeding is associated with a 7% lower chance of racing.
For instance, you might have two mares who are full sisters and share identical pedigrees but differ in their genomic inbreeding values. With this information, you could choose to breed the mare with a lower inbreeding value to optimize the genetic profile of the future foal, ensuring greater diversity.
- Thoroughbred Blood Percentage: Understand your horse’s true genetic connection to Thoroughbreds, a key factor for performance across disciplines. The test measures the actual Thoroughbred blood percentage, which can differ from pedigree calculations by up to 30%.
Genomic measurement is much more precise. We can measure the genomic data from your horse’s DNA and compare the ancestral data with the Thoroughbred population. Before this genomic data was available, we relied on pedigrees for crucial breeding decisions. This difference is significant, as the Thoroughbred blood percentage has a real impact on a horse’s performance across disciplines, especially in cross-country.
How to Collect DNA Samples
DNA is found in the hair follicle, which is why it’s essential to use pulled hairs to ensure reliable results. Take 12-15 hairs close to the horse’s skin and pull quickly and evenly. Trimmed or shed hairs collected from brushing can’t be used as they won’t provide the necessary genetic information.
